Stonewall Rebellion’s 55th Anniversary Festival Launches 4-Month Pride Fest Featuring Films, Video, Art, Literature, Music, and Livestream Events

Stonewall Weekend 2024 Weekend of Empowerment virtual event honors past and current LGBTQIA+ activists and advocates with artists around the world, introducing Africa Pride 2024

Weekend of Empowerment

On the 55th anniversary of New York City’s historic Stonewall rebellion, a four-month virtual human rights-focused festival, OUR PRIDE Fest 2024 begins with a weekend of programs including films, short films, artwork, poetry, original music productions, interviews, panel discussions, live Q&A with artivists, and livestream events.

The free ticketed festival will be available worldwide. Hosted and sponsored by film and festival streaming platform Filmocracy, it will reach an audience of over 8 million library patrons in the US, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia through their partnership with Hoopla Digital.

OUR PRIDE Fest 2024 highlights global human rights issues with the theme “Born Free and Equal,” adopted from Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, now in its 75th year.

Africa Pride
The festival is introducing the new Africa Pride initiative led by members of InterPride, the international association of Pride event organizers, including African arts, artivists and activists within and outside the continent.

The Weekend of Empowerment will highlight the historic Stonewall uprising and the marches that followed one year later, including the first permitted parade, which was led by human rights activist Rev. Troy Perry.  In response to the rising tide of homophobia and anti-LGBTQ legislation endangering lives across Africa, Perry has released a 2024 Call to Action .

The livestream programming is to include live and on-demand video from 14 Pride parades in Africa, Europe, the UK, the US and Latin America, where individuals and organizations will be marching in solidarity for the African LGBTQIA+ community.

GALLERIES
Multiple virtual art galleries will be introduced beginning on Stonewall Weekend and will include a hybrid live/online Human Rights are Universal Festival event in Kampala, Uganda, which now is in its third year.

Call for Entries
A Call for Entries will invite filmmakers, musicians, artists, poets, and other content creators to submit their creative works for exhibition and inclusion in live and on-demand programming.

The Africa Pride program on Stonewall Weekend includes grassroots, self-organizing small gatherings with OUR PRIDE Fest Watch Parties, a livestream Concert for Liberation and candlelight events.

The gatherings are independently created by individuals, community groups, churches, and spiritual communities around the world to honor the lives of LGBTQIA+ community members lost to hatred and violence, and those suffering under anti-LGBTQ+ laws and increasing homophobia/transphobia.

The small gatherings will share in a collective act and message of hope, resilience and unity.

October LGBT History Month
Films, short films, video, music productions, and other content will be available on-demand during the weekend and throughout the four months, concluding with Pre-Colonial Pride themed programming during the month of October, which will be the 20th anniversary of LGBT History Month.

The Pre-Colonial Pride programs will showcase the social acceptance of sexual and gender minorities in pre-colonial Asia, Africa and the Americas, and the lasting impact of colonial-era laws influencing current and proposed anti-LGBTQ legislation.

Now in its seventh year, OUR PRIDE Fest is a program of Rainbow Advocacy. Collaborating organizations include California LGBT Arts Alliance and a coalition of InterPride member organizations.
