Flag50

Flag50 is a global arts and education initiative marking the 50th anniversary of the rainbow flag and its role in the ongoing struggle for dignity, visibility, and human rights worldwide.

Rather than treating the flag as a commercial symbol or commemorative logo, Flag50 approaches it as a living cultural artifact—shaped by history, resistance, creativity, and collective meaning.

Flag50 is developed in conversation with Pride organizations, artists, and educators through our OUR PRIDE in Action platform, reinforcing Pride as a global, interconnected movement.

Why the Rainbow Flag Matters

Since its creation in 1978, the rainbow flag has traveled far beyond its origins. It has appeared in marches and memorials, in moments of joy and moments of grief, in places of safety and places of risk.

For many, the flag represents visibility and belonging. For others, it marks courage in the face of criminalization or violence. Its meaning has never been fixed—it has evolved alongside the communities who carry it.

Flag50 creates space to reflect on that evolution with care, context, and shared responsibility.

What Flag50 Is (and Is Not)

Flag50 is:

  • A platform for arts, education, and storytelling

  • A space for reflection alongside celebration

  • A collaborative framework connecting local and global work

  • Grounded in human rights principles and lived experience

Flag50 is not:

  • A branding campaign

  • A single event or festival

  • A commercial licensing effort

  • A definitive or singular narrative

This initiative prioritizes depth over spectacle and context over consumption.

How the Initiative Works

Flag50 brings together artists, educators, cultural institutions, Pride organizations, and community partners to explore the flag’s history and meaning through creative and educational work.

Activities may include:

  • Artistic commissions and installations

  • Educational resources and public conversations

  • Storytelling and publishing projects

  • Youth and intergenerational engagement

  • Cross-border and cross-cultural collaboration

The initiative is designed to be flexible and participatory, allowing partners to engage in ways that reflect their own contexts and communities.

A Global Moment (2028 and Beyond)

The 50th anniversary of the rainbow flag coincides with broader global milestones, including the 80th anniversary of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights.

Flag50 recognizes this convergence as an opportunity—not for spectacle, but for reflection. It asks how symbols of liberation carry meaning across time, geography, and political realities, and what responsibility comes with visibility in an unequal world.

Who Flag50 Is For

Flag50 is intended for:

  • Pride organizations and cultural partners

  • Artists and storytellers

  • Educators and youth leaders

  • Community organizations and human rights advocates

Participation is collaborative, not extractive. Partners shape their own contributions within a shared ethical framework.

Looking Forward

Flag50 is not a conclusion—it is a point of connection.

As the rainbow flag enters its sixth decade, this initiative invites communities to consider not only what the flag represents, but how its meaning is carried forward through action, care, and shared responsibility.

Flag50 invites reflection, creativity, and collaboration in service of dignity, memory, and justice.

Flag50 is a collaborative initiative shaped by artists, educators, and Pride partners.
