Steps to Liberation
From Darkness to Rainbows

Nancy Cohen takes us back to the years before Pride, when LGBTQ+ people faced discrimination, violence, police harassment, and the constant threat of losing their homes, families, and livelihoods. She begins with Morris Kight’s arrival in Los Angeles in 1957 and the instinct that would define his life: he saw a need and found a way to respond.

Long before the Rainbow Flag, Morris was helping people survive. He provided bail, shelter, transportation, employment assistance, and a 24-hour telephone hotline from his home. His commitment to helping others had begun even earlier, during the Great Depression in Texas, and continued through the 1960s when he operated an underground clinic for people who needed medical treatment.

Cohen then turns to the emergence of Christopher Street West and the first Los Angeles Pride parade. She describes the fear and uncertainty surrounding the effort to obtain a parade permit, the risks the organizers faced, and the transformation that occurred when LGBTQ+ people came together in the streets and realized they were not alone.

But Morris’s legacy extended beyond the organizations and events he helped create. Cohen emphasizes his willingness to share the blueprint—the knowledge of how to organize, build community, create Pride celebrations, and establish lasting institutions. Through the people he mentored and inspired, that knowledge multiplied far beyond Los Angeles.

As a filmmaker producing a documentary about Morris, Cohen sees his story as one that must continue to be told. His legacy is not simply what he accomplished, but what he taught others: stand up, help one another, share the blueprint, and keep moving forward.

His story began in the darkness. His work helped bring the sunshine and rainbows.
