Wyatt O'Brian Evans

United States

He/Him

Arguably, Wyatt O'Brian Evans is the quintessential Renaissance man. Mr. Evans is a journalist, author, radio personality, voice-over (V/O) instructor/talent, and Intimate Partner Violence & Abuse (IPV/A) subject matter expert (SME)/advocate/motivational speaker.

Steps to Liberation
"The Unshackling Of My Soul"

Wyatt O’Brian Evans begins by telling the story of his best friend, “Jase,” a man he has known all his life. After losing his father at a young age and struggling with his sexual identity, Jase entered a relationship that initially appeared to be love but gradually became defined by control, isolation, humiliation, and abuse.

As the relationship deepened, the abuse escalated. Jase’s partner monitored him, isolated him from family and friends, attacked his self-esteem, and used his fear of being exposed as gay to exert even greater control. Eventually, the emotional and psychological abuse became physical, forcing Jase to confront the danger he was facing and find a way to escape.

Wyatt uses this story to explore the complex realities of intimate partner violence within LGBTQ+ communities. He examines how fear, shame, stigma, isolation, and the closet can create additional barriers for survivors seeking help. Abuse, he emphasizes, is fundamentally about control—and recognizing the warning signs can be an important step toward safety.

The story also becomes a reflection on healing and liberation. Wyatt describes the importance of therapy, support, self-acceptance, and finding the courage to imagine a life beyond an abusive relationship. He has transformed his own experience into advocacy as a journalist, motivational speaker, author, and advocate, making LGBTQ+ intimate partner violence a central theme of his work.

He also offers practical guidance for recognizing abusive behavior and seeking help, while reminding survivors that leaving an abusive relationship is itself an act of courage.

At its heart, The Unshackling of My Soul is a story about breaking the silence that allows abuse to remain hidden—and reclaiming the freedom to live without fear, shame or isolation.
